A Painting Holiday Course in beautiful Devon, visiting and painting beautiful landscapes/gardens. In May trees and fields in the landscape retain their spring freshness, azaleas, peonies and many shrubs in the gardens reach a peak of flowering and roses and herbaceous borders are all beginning to bloom. This is a studio and outdoor based course which introduces and practices skills which will help you to create successful paintings. We aim for at least two full days out in beautiful gardens of the area, which offer a choice of individual garden areas or more distant scenes to use as inspiration for sketching and painting. The timetable runs from Saturday evening to Friday morning, with one free afternoon for you to explore the local area. There is time to learn skills for working outdoors and composing a picture, with a gradual introduction to working from outdoor subjects. We will cover sketching, tonal values and composition, negative painting and colour mixing. Students bring their preferred choice of painting medium and receive individual advice on use of materials and painting skills; you may wish to use the opportunity to try out a new medium with a tutor to guide you.
Materials Please bring sketching materials including charcoal, sketchbook, and watercolour or pastel equipment according to preference. Also recommended- protective clothing for painting, suitable footwear and clothes for outside work, including waterproofs. Digital camera. Folding stool if needed.
More detailed information about materials and equipment is sent out shortly before the course. You may already have all you need to get the most out of your holiday - we encourage you to contact the artist for more advice, so that you donít leave behind things that you will find useful, and to avoid expensive purchases which may prove unneccesary.
Other costs Student's lunch/refreshments on visit days. We are surrounded by beautiful scenery and gardens including National Trust properties, so you may wish to bring your membership card if you have one and and extend your stay before or after the course to practise your painting. This is also wonderful walking and cycling country on the edge of Exmoor, and non-painting partners are welcome.
